JewEasy is a community directory and a place for that community to talk to each other. This page says what we hold, why, and how to be rid of it. It describes what the site actually does — if something here stops being true, the page is wrong and we want to know.

The short version

• We do not sell anything about you, and there is no advertising network on this site.
• Your exact location is never stored. It is blurred by up to a mile before it is written down.
• Your phone number is never shown to another member. Calls and messages run through the site.
• You can delete your account, and what you wrote goes with it.

Browsing without an account

The directory — kosher businesses, shuls, events, the Torah library — is public and needs no account. Reading it we keep only what any web server keeps: the request, the time, and the rough origin, in logs held by Microsoft Azure for a short period so we can find faults and block abuse. There is no tracking pixel, no analytics account and no third-party cookie.

One cookie is set for everyone: an anti-forgery token, which is what stops another site submitting a form as you. Signing in adds a session cookie. Neither follows you anywhere else.

If you join

An account is a name, a mobile number, an email address and a password. The password is stored only as a PBKDF2-SHA256 hash — we cannot read it, and nor can anyone who steals the database.

Your mobile number is never shown to another member. It is there so we can reach you about your own account. Messages and voice or video calls between members run through JewEasy precisely so that nobody has to hand over a number to talk.

Location

Sharing your area powers "people near me", the carpool map and distances on listings. When you share it, the browser's exact position is blurred by a random distance of up to a mile in a random direction, and only the blurred point is saved — the real one never reaches the database. Maps draw a circle rather than a pin, and distances read "about 3 miles away" because that is genuinely all we know.

You can hide from the map without deleting your area, or delete the area entirely, from your settings. The iPhone app asks the phone for a position to sort the directory by distance; it sends that position as a query and we do not store it.

What other people can see

• Posts, photos, stories and groups are visible to signed-in members. None of it is on the public web and none of it is indexed by search engines.
• A private account shows only its name, photo and counts; posts and stories reach approved followers only.
• Shidduchim photos can be set to "on request", where they stay hidden behind an initials avatar until you approve a person, one at a time.
• Blocking works in both directions: neither of you sees the other anywhere on the community side.

Orders and payment

Placing an order sends your name, contact details and the order itself to that business, because they cannot fill it otherwise. Card payments are handled by Stripe; card numbers are entered on Stripe's own page and never touch this site. Where a business takes payment at pickup, no card details exist at all.

Other services we call

These are the only places data leaves for, and what goes:

• Stripe — payment, when you pay by card.
• Microsoft Azure — hosting, and the neural voice that reads Torah aloud. The verse text is sent to be spoken; nothing about you is.
• Sefaria and Hebcal — Torah texts and the Jewish calendar. Requests come from our server, not your browser, so they never see you.
• 8x8 / Jitsi — the voice and video calls, which are peer-to-peer where the network allows it.
• An email provider — order confirmations and notices to businesses.

Nothing is sent to an advertising network, a data broker, or an analytics company.

Keeping and deleting

We keep what you have put here for as long as your account exists. Delete your account and your posts, photos, listings, dating profile and messages go with it. Orders are kept as long as the business needs them for its own records and tax obligations. Photos you delete are removed from disk, not merely hidden.

You can also take yourself off individual things without leaving: come off the singles list, hide from the map, or turn off event invitations, all from your settings.

Children

JewEasy is not for under-13s, and the shidduchim section is for adults only. We do not knowingly keep an account for a child. Tell us and we will remove it.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask for a copy of what we hold, ask for it to be corrected, or ask us to delete it. If you are in California, that includes the right to know and to delete under the CCPA, and we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined. If you are in the UK or the EU, the lawful basis is your consent for optional things like location, and the performance of a contract for the account and any order you place.

Changes

When this changes we update the date at the top. Material changes will be said plainly on the site rather than slipped in quietly.
